hello,

A good friend of mine emailed this question to me and I think that it is best suited here in this forum - so feel free to pass on some guidance!

“...it seems like my anterior arm, forearm and palm of hand are too stiff to get into bujabidhasana (sp?), (the one when you plant your hands between your legs but from behind your legs and then lift your legs over your elbows). i hope you know what i mean. i was wondering if you had any tips for me for this pose. i can’t get my hands flat on the ground which means i feel like i can’t really lift myself up b/c i am not even stable on the ground. should i just be working through that pose just in a stretch with my arms on the ground until i am flexible enough to get my hands flat and then lift my legs or are there any modifications i can do?”

My advice to her was to listen closely and to move with vigilant awareness. Can you think of some good modifications?

take care,
Sonja

It may be that restriction in the hips does not allow the practitioner to squat deep enough to root her hands. So a variety of hip/groin openers may be helpful. I would recommened a tonne of core strengthening exercises. It would also be of benefit to do a lot of chest/shoulder openers as well as another arm balance to get the sense.

My list of Asana that may help:
Extended side angle
Extended triangle
Wide leg forward fold(standing and seated)-great for shoulders ie fingers interlaced
Horse stance...a wide leg squat
Humble warrior
crane
wide leg abdominal exercise reaching hands through legs
happy baby

Hope these suggestions might help.

Love and Light
