A witness of duality

Traveling with my partner Mairen, Trevor and Ally a few weeks ago I noticed a very interesting difference. A seeming division with Trevor and I on one side of the car and Mairen and Ally on the other.

The discussion, primarily around global warming, was split down the middle and yet there was this balance between emotional, tangible and witness, acceptance.

I have been doing a fair bit of reading lately on Tantric belief and philosophy, including “The Way of the Superior Man” by David Deida, and this has all got me to thinking.

I am curious to know your experiences around your life and practice.

Women: in your daily life and yoga practice do you find caught up in your bodies, in the sense you very much identify your self by what it is doing. Notice a tendency to be so absorbed in your Shatki that you lose your witness, the ability to distinguish self between your thoughts and feelings?

Men: In your daily life and yoga practice do you find that it is possibly being somewhat narrated by a third person, this tendency to want to watch the entirety of what is going on without making a strong connection to the sensation of it.

I would also be interested in how you think your practice could bring about further balance. A complete comfortablilty in both polarities, so to allow for your fullest expression of being/

An interesting topic, Noah. I have been studying this in myself over the past few months, specifically during my menstrual cycle. Having observed both myself and my partner at this time of the month, I have noticed the same tendencies you have spoke of- I lose touch with my obersvant self, instead getting swept into an emotional tidalwave. My partner does the complete opposite, also losing the seat of the observer, to a standpoint completely removed from all emotion and sensation. I think, at this time of the month, my Shakti becomes accentuated, as does my partner’s more masculine energy. Where do the two meet? This is our challenge. Finding balance.
Balance, however, can only be found if one allows for the ebb and flow of the energies, in the same way one sways in Vrksasana/Tree. So to answer your question, how could one bring about further balance in our yoga practice? Personally, I like to allow my mind to delve fully into both polarities, being mindful of which it is most naturally drawn to. I may, at the beginning of my asana practice, be very experiential and fully tuned into the sensations in my body, and use this as a vehicle to pull back, and view the experience third-person. I think it is a constant dance between the two- we can only find our equilibrium if we recognize what each spectrum feels like. Allow the mind to explore every standpoint, and it will come to rest in the core of our being.
