Sometimes you get stuck on a project or repair job, and you need to know how to un-stick tight, crusted nuts, bolts, and washers. We have all the products you need at LTS Supply, but we also want to give you the tips that will make those roducts work well for you! Machine screws and machine screw nuts may get stuck over time. It is the same with self-tapping screws and socket screws. Essentially any screw or fastener you’re working with has the potential to get attached too tightly over time.
First tip: you can use a torch to heat a fastener or self-tapping screw, which often loosens the lock or blockage that was causing the screw to be unmovable. Heat, oil and tapping in combination will help undo most all sticky fastener situation. Be careful not to heat the bolt too much, or it will become too soft. Just about a minute or so for the average-size bolt will be suitable. Then, wait a few moments for the bolt to be cool enough to touch, spray a bit of oil on and around it, as well as on the machine screw nut, for example, if that is possible. Tap the screw a few times to loosen up the threads inside, and then try your hand again at removing it.
Another trick: When a bolt head has worn down and become rounded, wrenches end up slipping off them and can’t gain friction. If this happens, try using a pair of locking pliers. Grip the pliers tightly, because you may only have a few more chances before the head is even more rounded and can’t produce friction with the pliers. If this doesn’t work, try the same heat, oil, and tapping technique as described above.

This blog will give you an introductory idea of when you would choose to use a self-tapping screws, be them stainless steel self-tapping screws, machine screws, socket screws, or any other types we have available at LTS Supply. There is a difference between self-tapping screws and thread-forming screws as well, although the two are relatively similar.
Self-tapping screws prove to be a pretty resourceful way of putting together different materials, especially when the materials are not the same, yet they must be joined together. Additionally, when you may have to partially disassemble a project for maintenance or repairs, self-tapping screws allow you to do that without damaging the overall system.
Thread-forming and thread-cutting are the two major types of self-tapping screws. Thread-forming actually change the nature of the plastic or other material they are driven into, creating a thread that is permanent. Then, thread-cutting screws physically remove material as they are driven into it, just as you’d see a machine tap working, to form the thread path. So, it’s not so much that self-tapping screws and thread-forming screws are different, but thread-forming screws are more specific. A thread-forming screw is definitely a self-tapping screw, but a self-tapping screw may not be a thread-forming screw.
Project designers and builders need to determine which self-tapping screw will work best, so they look at a material’s structural modulus. This is a measure of plastic’s stiffness. Self-tapping screws are often used in plastic, to note. This modulus will be the best way to determine how much stress the material can handle before it breaks or warps from the screw. Designers pay attention to the temperature at which the modulus is taken, as well as the humidity. These factors will also warp plastic or malleable materials, so they need to be considered in building and fastening.

We sell a ton of different screws at LTS Supply. This blog is intended to demystify this big screwy world by telling you a brief bit about a few common types of screws you may need or encounter.
First, there are the machine screw nuts. Machine screws themselves are screws (or some may consider them bolts) that have diameters ranging up to 0.75 inch. They are often used with machine screw nuts, and they are driven into tapped holes. Machine screws and their nuts tend to be mostly available in smaller sizes, which typically are referred to as screws rather than bolts. They are still relatively heavy-duty and often may be used on machines, as the title suggests.
Next, we have socket screws. What are these guys? Socket screws are also known as “socket cap screws,” “socket head cap screws,” or “Allen bolts.” They have a cylindrical head and a hexagonal drive hole. The name refers to a type of threaded fastener, where the head is 1.5 times the dimensions of the screw shaft.
Lastly, let’s define a self-tapping screw. There are several varieties of self-tapping screws, as it is just a general category. There are actually self-tapping machine screws, and that machine screw and nut is the first type of fastener we spoke of. A self-tapping screw is not so different from a normal screw, except that the lower part of the screw shaft is designed to cut grooves in a material, as it is driven into an untapped hole.
There are always more screws to talk about and more details to fill in about existing screws we mentioned. But this should give you an introduction to the world of LTS Supply and all that we have to offer.
